ACANA or ORIJEN: what are the differences and which one to choose?

ACANA and ORIJEN are both grain-free kibble ranges built around a meat-rich diet, but ORIJEN goes further in the proportion of meat and fish, while ACANA offers slightly more accessible recipes and a wider variety of regional ranges. The choice mainly depends on budget, your animal's appetite and the formula you need (puppy, adult, small or large breed).

1. A common point: grain-free recipes

ACANA and ORIJEN belong to the same family of kibble, built around a grain-free diet rich in animal-derived ingredients. Both ranges emphasise varied protein sources (poultry, fish, sometimes red meat) rather than a single source, and avoid grains such as wheat or corn in favour of other carbohydrate sources. To better understand the benefits and limits of grain-free formulas in general, our article grain-free kibble covers this topic more broadly.

2. The main differences between the two ranges

  • Meat content: ORIJEN is historically positioned as the range richest in animal-derived ingredients, with a higher share of meat and fish in the recipe. ACANA remains a quality kibble, but with a generally more moderate proportion of meat.
  • Recipe diversity: ACANA offers more regional and themed recipes (game, fish, red meat), making it easier to vary flavours within the same brand.
  • Positioning: ACANA positions itself as an accessible premium option, while ORIJEN targets customers looking for a formula even closer to a diet rich in animal protein.

Both brands belong to the same group and share part of their know-how, which explains their common points while each keeps its own identity.

3. Which one to choose for your dog or cat?

For an active dog or a cat with a good appetite who tolerates protein-rich formulas well, ORIJEN can be an interesting option to try. For a more sensitive animal, or if you want to introduce grain-free kibble gently, ACANA is often a more gradual entry point. In all cases, any new kibble should be introduced through a gradual food transition over 7 to 10 days, to avoid temporary digestive discomfort.

4. Accounting for life stage and size

Beyond choosing between ACANA and ORIJEN, both brands offer recipes by life stage and, for dogs, by breed size. A small-breed puppy does not have the same needs as a large-breed puppy, and a senior cat does not have the same needs as a kitten: it is therefore useful to first choose the right category (puppy, adult, small or large breed) before even comparing the two brands. Our articles on choosing puppy kibble and on how much kibble for a dog detail these guidelines by life stage.

If you switch from one brand to the other, for example from ACANA to ORIJEN, take the same precaution as with any kibble change: a gradual transition over about 7 to 10 days, mixing the two kibbles in proportions that slowly reverse, to give digestion time to adapt to a potentially richer formula.

5. Available ranges by your animal's profile

Both brands also offer these recipes for puppies and kittens, for example ACANA Puppy & Junior or ORIJEN Puppy for dogs, and ACANA First Feast or ORIJEN Kitten for cats. Find all the ranges, across every life stage, in our dog kibble and cat kibble collections.

6. Do you have to choose a grain-free formula?

ACANA and ORIJEN's grain-free formulas suit many dogs and cats, but they are not systematically essential: some animals digest grains very well, and the choice between a grain-free or grain-inclusive formula mainly depends on your animal's individual digestive tolerance rather than a general rule. If in doubt about the best formula for your animal, your veterinarian can advise you based on their profile.

7. In short

ACANA and ORIJEN share a grain-free, meat-rich approach, with ORIJEN positioned on a slightly stronger animal protein content, and ACANA on a wider offer of regional recipes. The best choice depends on your animal's appetite, digestive tolerance and your budget, always tested through a gradual transition. Neither brand is objectively "better" in absolute terms: how your dog or cat responds to the kibble, observed over several weeks, remains the best indicator.
